Door Tune-Up vs Door Overhaul

Fix it… or really fix it?

If your door isn’t working right, you’re not alone. We hear versions of this every week:

“It only sticks when my mother-in-law visits.”
“I have to lift it with my knee to lock it.”
“It worked fine… until winter.”

The big question is usually the same:

Is this a quick fix, or does this door need real attention?

Most door problems fall into one of two buckets: Tune-Up or Overhaul.

Door Tune-Up

Think: chiropractic adjustment

A tune-up is for doors that mostly work but have developed a little attitude over time.

Good for things like:

  • Sticking or rubbing (usually seasonal)

  • A latch that only catches if you “find the sweet spot”

  • A door that closes… but not confidently

  • Minor sag or hinge issues

Pros

  • Faster

  • Lower cost

  • Minimal disruption

Cons

  • Only works if the door and frame are basically sound

  • Won’t fix deeper, long-standing problems

  • If your door is annoying but not embarrassing, a tune-up is often enough.

Door Overhaul

Think: physical therapy + rebuild

An overhaul is for doors that have never behaved — or haven’t since the Reagan administration.

Good for things like:

  • Doors that have been planed… and planed again

  • Frames that have slowly drifted out of square

  • Older or historic doors that deserve better than constant patching

  • Problems that keep coming back no matter who “fixes” them

Pros

  • More thorough

  • Extends the life of a good door

  • Better long-term performance

Cons

  • More involved

  • Higher cost than a tune-up

  • Requires careful evaluation

If your door has a long backstory, this is usually the right move.

How the process works

  1. Free consultation
Start with a free conversation — in the showroom, on the phone, or online. We’ll talk through the problem, review photos if you have them, and help you understand which options might fit and what the typical price ranges look like.

  2. On-site assessment (if needed)
If the right path isn’t clear yet, the next step is an on-site assessment. This allows us to verify conditions in place and give you a clear, written quote for the correct service.

No pressure. No guessing. Just clarity.
