Prehung Door Replacement

When a full replacement is required.

A full replacement involving removing the frame, trim work, and construction-level installation.

Prehung Door Replacement involves removing the existing frame, trim work, and construction-level installation. This option is typically more involved and more expensive than New Door, Same Jamb and is only recommended when project requirements call for a complete replacement. Because of the construction involved, this service is typically more expensive than New Door, Same Jamb. Final pricing is determined after an onsite assessment.

What is a Prehung Door Replacement?

Prehung Door Replacement involves removing the existing door, frame, and often surrounding trim, then installing a complete new door unit (door slab + jamb). This is a construction project, not an adjustment or slab-only replacement.

Because of the scope, prehung replacements require more planning, labor, and coordination than other door services.

What’s Included

  • Removal of the existing door and frame

  • Installation of a new prehung door unit

  • Standard weatherstripping (typically included with prehung doors)

  • Trim removal and reinstallation or replacement as required

  • Proper fitting for swing, latch, and seal

  • Clear explanation of scope and next steps

Optional Add-Ons & Upgrades

Add-ons are discussed during the showroom visit or assessment and priced separately.

Hardware

  • Existing hardware may be reused if compatible

  • New hardware upgrades available if desired

What’s Not Included

To keep scope clear and predictable, the following are not included unless approved as add-ons:

  • Hardware (existing hardware may be reused if compatible)

  • Paint, stain, or finish work

  • Permits or inspections, if required

  • Additional construction beyond the door opening

Paint / Prefinishing

  • Paint and stain work is available and is handled by a subcontractor, who you will work with directly

When Is a Prehung Door Replacement the Right Choice?

This service is a good fit if:

  • A full door and frame replacement is required or specified

  • Design, performance, or code requirements call for a new frame

  • You are planning a more comprehensive exterior or interior update

  • You understand this is a construction-level project

If a less invasive option will work, we’ll recommend it.

Timing

Prehung door replacements typically take longer than slab-only replacements and may span a full day or more depending on scope and site conditions.

Our Approach

We don’t default to prehung door replacements. They involve more disruption and cost than other options. When they’re required—or clearly the right choice—we handle them carefully, thoughtfully, and with clear communication throughout the process.
