Preserving History: Upgrading Door Hardware at Providence’s Old State House
The Old State House in Providence has stood at the center of Rhode Island’s story since 1762. From colonial governance to the early foundations of American independence, this landmark has witnessed more than 260 years of change—while remaining a constant symbol of craftsmanship and civic pride.
At Classic Door, we don’t take that responsibility lightly.

A Continued Commitment to Craftsmanship
Our relationship with the Old State House began in July 2021, when our team was entrusted with fabricating and installing the front entrance doors. That project required more than technical skill—it demanded a deep respect for the building’s historical integrity.
Every detail, from material selection to finishing, was carefully considered to ensure the new entryway aligned with the building’s original character while delivering modern durability and performance.
Now, we’re back on site—this time focusing on upgrading and installing a full suite of door hardware throughout the building.
The Challenge: Modern Performance, Historic Integrity
Working on a structure like the Old State House presents a unique set of challenges:
Preserve the historic aesthetic
Meet modern safety and security standards
Ensure long-term durability in a high-traffic public building
Integrate seamlessly with existing architectural elements
Unlike standard commercial projects, there’s no “off-the-shelf” solution here. Every hardware decision—from hinges to locking mechanisms—must balance function with authenticity.
Hardware Installation Scope
Our current work includes the installation and upgrading of:
Heavy-duty hinges designed for longevity and smooth operation
Period-appropriate locksets that align with the building’s historic appearance
Concealed closers to maintain clean sightlines while improving door control
Reinforced strike plates and security hardware for enhanced protection
Custom-fitted components to accommodate the building’s original door frames
Each piece of hardware was selected not just for performance, but for how well it complements the architecture of the 18th-century structure.
Precision Installation Process
Installing hardware in a historic building is a meticulous process that requires both planning and adaptability.
1. Assessment & Documentation
Before any work begins, our team carefully evaluates existing doors, frames, and structural conditions. Many elements in historic buildings are not perfectly square or uniform, so precise measurements are critical.
2. Custom Fitting
Unlike modern construction, historic doors often require on-site modification of hardware. We ensure each component is fitted precisely without compromising the integrity of the original woodwork.
3. Reinforcement & Alignment
Where necessary, we reinforce connection points to support modern hardware loads while maintaining a discreet appearance. Proper alignment ensures smooth operation and prevents long-term wear.
4. Installation & Calibration
Every hinge, closer, and lock is installed and then fine-tuned. This includes:
Adjusting door swing and closing speed
Ensuring consistent latch engagement
Verifying accessibility compliance
Testing for durability under repeated use
5. Final Inspection
We conduct a full walkthrough to ensure each door operates flawlessly and meets both performance expectations and preservation standards.
Respecting the Details That Matter
One of the most important aspects of this project is what you don’t see.
We take great care to:
Minimize visible modern elements
Preserve original materials wherever possible
Match finishes and hardware styles to the building’s era
Avoid invasive modifications that could compromise historical value
It’s a balance between craftsmanship and restraint—knowing when to improve, and when to preserve.
A Long-Term Approach to Preservation
Projects like this go beyond a single installation. They’re part of an ongoing commitment to maintaining the building for future generations.
Door hardware plays a critical role in that mission:
It protects the structure
It ensures safe public access
It reduces wear on historic doors
It extends the lifespan of key architectural elements
By upgrading these systems thoughtfully, we’re helping ensure the Old State House continues to serve the community for decades to come.
Proud to Be Part of Providence’s History
Returning to the Old State House is more than just another job—it’s an opportunity to contribute to something enduring.
At Classic Door, we believe that true craftsmanship isn’t just about building something new. It’s about respecting what already exists and making sure it stands strong for the future.
We’re honored to play a role in preserving one of Rhode Island’s most important landmarks—and we look forward to continuing that work wherever history and craftsmanship meet.
